What are Special Needs?

Posted on Wednesday, 13th July 2011 by Eunice

We have been asked by a number of people what is meant by Special Needs;

Children with special needs are not an easily defined group. Some have a very obvious and well researched disability, such as Down’s syndrome or cerebral palsy; others may have a specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia or giftedness. What defines them as children with special needs is the fact that they need additional help in some areas of development when compared with other children.

Special needs may be grouped into a number of categories including;
• Physical impairment
• Sensory impairment
• Speech and language difficulties
• Learning difficulties which may be moderate or severe
• Specific learning difficulties
• Medical conditions
• Emotional difficulties
• Behavioural difficulties
• Giftedness
